Galaxy: three photogravures

Hammer was invited by the Trykkeriet – Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Bergen, Norway to participate in their premier year. Extrapolating from an already on going body of planetary related works that included orbs covered in exotic skin and tooled in gold, along with a series of accompanying pastels, Hammer proposed an edition of three prints titled Galaxy. After close discussion with the team at the center, three images were chosen and photogravure was decided upon as the preferred method of reproduction. The “planets” here depicted are actually studies of glass marbles. Due to the infinite and subtly shifting nature of the skies above us, as well as the constantly shifting point of perspective when viewing glass marbles, photogravure, with is tender gradations, served as the perfect method to render both the object and the intention. Later details were added using silkscreen. Hammer has made many prints, notably etchings and woodcuts. These are his first photogravures.
